He isn't really sure how it happened, the first time. He went to make some jelly for toast, his thoughts drifted, perhaps, and he ended up not just with the jelly, but also with several bananas. This was, as you can imagine, a huge shock, and he actually jumped back when he first noticed them, startled by the absolute jumpscare of their appearance. He calmed down quickly enough, and started playing around to see what would happen.

In a way it makes sense. He has been able to tell that everything is more magical here this month, a complete opposite to the effect Dark had on things. During Dark his powers were weakened, so it would follow they are stronger now. He just didn't assume that would mean expanding his powers.

This, of course, brings us to now. It's early afternoon in one of the many parlors of the mansion, and he seems to finally have gotten the hang of things, as evidenced by the fact that he's absolutely surrounded by various fruits, fruit wines, preserves, vegetables, and even a few bags of rice. His thyrsus, which has scarcely left his side since he found it a few days ago, is resting against a wall. If his new powers are linked just to Rainbows, that means he has less than twelve hours to enjoy them. He's reasonably certain that the thyrsus will remain after the season changes.

Dionysus grabs his thyrsus before they head out of the room, and quickly falls in step beside Magnus as they walk. "Yeah? What's up?"

[summerdude]

"Can you, like, tell when other gods show up?"

[vineleaves]

What brought this on, he wonders, but he answers anyway. "Sort of? I could tell Apollo was here, but not until I was nearly at the room he was in at the time. Couldn't tell with Xie Lian at all until the day he was -- ah, younger, I think, though I suspect he's been through something or other that caused me to not be able to tell, theoretically I should have been able." A pause. "Did you know he's a god? Misfortune, apparently. Anyway, why do you ask?"

[summerdude]

"I figure out he was a god within, like, twenty minutes of meeting him, but he told me he was Aesircore," Magnus says, and clarifies, "Um, a martial god. Specifically. My dad was here the other day. I mean... I guess it was a few weeks ago now¹."


¹It's important for this typist to note that this conversation is happening AFTER Magnus told Laertes about Frey's visit!

Dionysus has other issues to worry about 20 minutes after meeting Xie Lian, so that checks out, he figures. The next thing Magnus says though makes him stop walking. “Your— oh goodness — Magnus — how, ah, how did that — how long? Just the day?” Dionysus knows that there have been times when visitors have been allowed. People from home. He was rather under the impression it tended to be a lot of people all at once though, and he’s pretty sure he would have at least noticed if there were several visitors. Must have just been a special occasion for Magnus?

“How did that go?” He finally manages to get out coherently.

[summerdude]

"Oh, I'm pretty sure it was a summer thing, since he's the god of it. It was nice to see him! And to know some of my prayers have gotten through." He blushes as he says this, of course; most of his prayers are thoroughly sarcastic. "It was only a dream visit. You know? He came, we walked around, my body hung out at camp with Alex and Sunny."

Dionysus smiles. "I'm glad things went well. Wish I could've met him while he was here!" But, well, if it was a weird dream situation thing then that clearly would've been difficult.

[summerdude]

"Yeah," says Magnus. "The reason I'm asking, though, is -- part of the reason Alex came here for good is because we assumed this was a No-Parent Zone. You know?" He pauses, then amends, "No godly parent. And also no Mr. Fierro. I'm not trying to get, like, Sagramore and Laertes yeeted out of here."

[vineleaves]

"Ah, I see... I take it her parents are both ... less than ideal candidates to show up here?"

[summerdude]

"Yeah. If her mom showed up... badness."

[vineleaves]

"Who's her mom, again?"

[summerdude]

"You ever hear about Loki?"

[vineleaves]

"Only a little," he says, sincerely regretting not paying more attention to other religions at home. "Trickster god, right?"

[summerdude]

"Yeah, sort of. He's also the god of lies... and of magic... and he's pretty cruel and nihilistic in general."

[vineleaves]

"Shit, that's -- not a great combination..." He puts a hand on Magnus' shoulder. "Look, I -- I don't know how much it counts, but if Loki ever does show up here, I'm not going to let anything happen to you, or Alex, or anyone else, okay? I don't, y'know, I don't know much about Loki, but I mean... I am a god too, plus Apollo's here to help out as well -- I know you don't like him, but he's not going to let anything bad happen to anyone either, trust me." Not that he wants to have to fight a god, but he would if it meant keeping everyone here safe. "You don't need to worry about it, Magnus. I promise."

[summerdude]

"I'm not worried about Alex's safety," Magnus hastens to say. "Loki can't force her to die anymore. It's more... I guess it would be nice to have a forewarning system of some sort."

[vineleaves]

Loki can't force her to die anymore. Every single goddamned sentence Dionysus hears about the universe Magnus and Apollo are from makes him hate it even more, and he hated it a good deal to start with. "The fact that this is even a concern you have to have just -- infuriates me. Nobody should feel the need to have a warning system in place for a parent showing up."

[summerdude]

"You're telling me."

[vineleaves]

"You both deserve so much better than the shit you've been through."

[summerdude]

"Thanks, Uncle D." Part of Magnus feels like he should tell him to not get so worked up, because it is what it is. A much, much bigger part of him is relieved to get more evidence that Uncle D is Not Like Other Gods.

[vineleaves]

"Well, ah, we should probably get that pumpkin outside so you don't have to keep carrying it around."

[summerdude]

"Oh! Yeah." Magnus sort of forgot he was holding it. It's not that heavy, really, just a couple hundred pounds maybe.

[vineleaves]

So they continue outside, and once they find a suitable spot and the pumpkin is firmly on the ground, Dionysus starts to grow it again, but stops. "Do you want to try?"

[summerdude]

"Um," Magnus says, and hesitates. "I don't want to mess it up. I think my plants have to be connected to roots to work."

[vineleaves]

"I could grow it back some roots if you want?" He can do that sort of thing with grapes if he feels like it, and so far today there doesn't seem to be a limit on what he can do with other plants as well, so why not? "I mean, you don't have to. It's not like it's any trouble for me to finish it." Just seemed like Magnus was curious about whether or not he could do something like this earlier, so...
